Port Augusta Industry Hub

Capitalizing on the strategic location of the Port Playford site, YG Group intends to transform the entire area into a regional hub for mineral processing and manufacturing, with the potential to develop into a full-fledged Industrial Park. This redevelopment aims to add significant value to South Australia’s mineral resources by harnessing affordable renewable energy and offering miners direct market access via a multimodal road, rail, and port terminal.

Commercial and Strategic Drivers:

  • Extensive industrial land availability, with major earthworks and foundational infrastructure already in place.
  • Existing connections to the main rail line, access roads, power networks, transmission lines, and water supplies.
  • A prime location at the top of Spencer Gulf, close to key mineral-rich areas and other vital infrastructure.
  • Surrounded by world-class renewable energy resources.
  • Existing tenants, including (1) YG Group’s export facility and mineral processing plant, a potential HDRI plant; (2) Hallet Group’s green cement manufacturing plant; (3) Bowen Rail’s Logistics Storage, which present opportunities for partnerships, suppliers, or customers.

Case Study:
Green Cement Transformation
at Port Augusta Industry Hub

The collaboration between Hallett Group and YG Group since 2022 represents a transformative step towards sustainable cement production in Australia. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and establish a sovereign supply chain for green cement products.

Hallett Group is investing $125 million in a green cement transformation project split between Port Augusta and Port Adelaide. The primary facility in Port Augusta will process industrial waste by-products, such as ash and slag, into low-carbon cement using renewable energy sources. This project is projected to reduce Australia’s CO2 emissions by up to 1 million tonnes annually.

This project exemplifies industrial ecology by converting waste products into valuable inputs for green cement production. It fosters local employment, strengthens regional economies, and aligns with climate change policies.

The partnership between Hallett Group and Port Augusta Operations is a landmark initiative in the transition to sustainable construction materials, positioning South Australia as a leader in green cement technology.
